Biography
After studying psychology at Nijmegen University (specialization in biological psychology), I completed my PhD research at Nijmegen Institute for Cognition and Information (NICI) in 2000 on “Influence of external and Internal context on learning behaviour”. As senior researcher at the International Institute of Biophysics (IIB), I developed biophotonics methods and signal analysis procedures for application in the detection of (oxygen) radical production related to health, lifestyle and meditation. As senior researcher, I validated for Meluna Agrifood B.V. the application of biophotonics methods for quality of food. In 2009, I started at the Sino-Dutch Center for Preventive and Personalized Medicine.

Research project
The relation between oxidative stress and chronic diseases is well recognized. New techniques are developed to monitor oxidation/reduction status within biological systems by both invasive and non-invasive methods. Attention is particularly focused on the technique of spontaneous ultraweak photon emission (UPE / autoluminescence). The combination of ultra-weak photon emission and metabolomics could potentially contribute to diagnostics. It is currently applied in the research on Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis, and the profiling of subtypes as described in bi-syndrome.
The association of UPE and production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and oxidative stress is also applied for both basic biomedical research and clinical in inflammation research, in particular in rheumatoid arthritis. Protocols are developed to utilize the technique to monitor and quantify the influences of behaviour and lifestyle.
